Burton Stevenson was an American anthropologist, but today he's best remembered for historical fiction and adventures, such as A soldier of Virginia; a Tale of Colonel Washington and Braddock’s defeat.

A Soldier of Virginia A Tale of Colonel Washington and Braddock Defeat Burton Egbert Stevenson 9781523777846 Books

I just re-read Mary Lee Settle's O Beulah Land and was curious to see how other historical fiction writers had treated Braddock's defeat over the years, and to my surprise, only Stevenson made an effort to portray one of the British army's most spectacular blunders with a serious, in depth treatment. A Soldier of Virginia came out in 1901 and was the first of this prolific and nearly forgotten writer's impressive output. While the Soldier of Virginia is a bit Parson Weemsish in its treatment of Washington's role in bringing on the French and Indian War, it is a thoroughly researched, well-written picture of the American colonial military situation before the outbreak of the War for Independence a decade following Braddock's debacle. Stevenson's characterization of colonial America's military personnel is outstanding, from the most common militiaman and scout to the ranking officers, nearly all of whom owed their appointments to politics, not expertise and experience. He also fairly represents the British point of view of the colonial militia's and helps explain the British failure to take the American rebellion seriously until it was too late for them. This novel is 114 years old, but it's still highly readable, informative, and well worth the hour or so it takes to read it. If it doesn't make you want to research Braddock's campaign and re-read The Last of the Mohicans, you probably shouldn't be reading historical fiction.

I read this book while I was at my Grandfather's house and have been looking for a copy ever since. It is a wonderful story about a young man who fights under George Washington in the French and Indian War. His parents were poor and when they died he went to live with some rich relatives whose daughter he fell in love with. It ends with a breath-taking battle to save his love and her mother from Indians. I would recomend this book to anyone!
great historical fiction action adventure and a girl
This book follows the exploits of a young Virginian who fights with Washington at Fort Necessity as well as with Braddock at the Battle of the Monongahela River. In some ways it is predictable, but would be a nice introduction to life in colonial times and particularly during the French and Indian War.
I've read all of Stevenson's murder mysteries all of which are set in the early 20th century. This novel is different. It is set in the 18th century about the time of the French and Indian war and captures family life and warfare of the time. A young Washington plays a major role, and Stevenson works to make him a noble military leader. Stevenson captures the idiom of the time and the language seems authentic. The ending of the work is weak, when all the problems of the narrator and main character are solved with a marriage. For a first novel, and a historical one at that, this is a good work.
